Usu

Usu

Series 2  |  Kuʻu Home  |  Pōʻai by Pono Potions  |  01 August 2025

Every year (till this day) we pound mochi for New Years. I hope we do forever. My aunties and cousins work really hard to keep this tradition alive.

An usu is a Japanese bowl made of either stone or wood. Its used primarily to pound the rice into mochi.

The sun and shadows that depict the age of this stone that we have used for generations...this texture is to highlight the strength and age that this stone carries.

Part 2 of my dadʻs core memories at the farm.
